What is the Model Compendium - exactly?
The BATTLE LANDS Model Compendium is an html file constructed for use as a sidekick app to play the game with. The file size is very low and works on any web browser - just like a webpage! It is self-contained and requires no additional data or software. Because it is self-contained there will be newer versions to download in the future, so be sure to check back for new updates! It allows the player to build a BATTLE LANDS army, share Army Rosters via text copy and markdown, save and load Rosters, print Rosters, organize Units, track Model's health, and score Victory Points. It has options for both Normal and Narrative Play scoring and setup. While not required it is highly recommended for your games.
You must download and run the file locally - no online functionality.

Game Mode UX improvements
• Players can now tap the Model tile displayed in their Unit Formations in Game Mode to surface their Model Reference Sheets. Tapping another Model or the same Model will collapse the open Sheet, and open the relevant new Sheet if another Model is tapped.• A HP indicator now resides at the bottom of each Model tile in the Unit Formations in Game Mode for a quick reference on a Model's remaining HP.
UNIT FORMATION
Position Changes Everything
Every Model comes with a Profile describing their behavior in Combat, depending on where in their Unit they reside.Models in Front tend to do Melee attacks, Models in the Middle do Ranged attacks, Models in the Rear cast spells or heal others. But choose wisely - there are only so many spots in each Row available!
Size and Shape Matters
Not all Models are built the same, that's a fact. Big Models take up more room, and champions carry more stuff.Players need to consider how much volume, and how much mass, each Model occupies when forming Units. You can only fit so much in one space!
Lifting the Veil
Unit Formations are revealed when a Unit is Deployed - not before the battle. This allows for a game of reacting and making last-minute adjustments between players during the setup phase. Players know which Models are in the other Army, just not how they will be grouped!
SOLO & DUAL TESTS
Dice rolling is what makes wargaming so exciting - the thrill of the roll and anticipation of the result is what keeps us coming back to the table to play another battle. BATTLE LANDS keeps that feeling alive by simplifying the rolls to two types.
Solo Tests
It's you against yourself - do you have the fortitude, the reaction speed, or the strength of will to overcome a conflict? Roll a single dice, look at your stat - equal or under passes, over and you fail.
Dual Tests
It's you versus the other player - and there can be only one! Both players now roll a dice and do one of two things:
- Add to a stat and note the difference, or
- take the higher result between the two of you.
BATTLE LANDS removed comparative charts and custom dice from standing between you and dramatic results. Players can expect Models to perform as well as their Cost, while there is always a chance for failure if the dice gods betray you!
the 3 acts narrative play
BATTLE LANDS is designed with the belief that being immersed in your General's model and their actions in battle makes the game as a whole enjoyable in an equal amount - the more you're into it the more you get out of it!To celebrate this we've attempted to weave a narrative story through gameplay objectives for the players, and spaced the game out across 3 Acts - distinct Story Breaks where players can assess the game state and score Narrative Objectives.
Persona - What Kind of Hero Are YOU
Choose one of six Personae to be the guiding personality for your protagonist. Are they on a quest for vengeance? Are they the last hope for survival? Or are they on a glorious campaign for the Empire? But choose wisely - your Persona limits which Narrative Objectives are available for you to complete and achieve Victory with!
Narrative Objectives - Your Story Unfolds in 3 Acts
These literary parallels are achievements that you decide you will attempt to complete, before the game begins. They are strung together to create your General's Destiny: how you want your story to unfold. Not all Objectives are in your control - your opponent will need to complete more than you for your protagonist to fulfill their destiny sometimes. Objectives are divided into 3 Acts, scored in different sections of the game.Act 1 ends after both sides Deploy their Units. Act 2 ends after six rounds of play. Act 3 ends after a winner is determined. Only Act 3 Objectives award Victory Points, while Act 1 and 2 Objectives are pass or fail.
Name Tag System - Make Every Game Meaningful
BATTLE LANDS introduces the Name Tag system to Narrative Play - a receipt of the match with a copy of the General's Destiny, Narrative Objectives completed, and a record of the battle. The loser of the battle gives up their Name Tag for their General from that fight, their story now coming to an end - or branching into a new chapter! Now players can field mighty Generals that have survived many battles with a record to prove it, without disrupting the balance of the game for newcomers.
Players will need to be tactical, and almost cooperative, if they want to achieve the General's Destiny they've designed for themselves. Or do they throw their fate to the wind and let whatever happens in the battle become the story for their heroes?
